Breast Reduction

Different techniques and the advantages of liposuction

Some of the reasons women undertake this procedure are obvious and others are less so. Breast reduction can be prompted by breasts that are too big, too heavy, limiting activities or causing back soreness.

There are a range of surgical procedures that different surgeons perform to achieve this result. We have been involved in most of these in the past and prefer the liposuction technique for a number of reasons.

Even the most modern surgical techniques such as those that conceal the scarring in the periareolar area (around the edge of the areola) and trans auxiliary area (via the armpit) involve cutting to remove tissue. As a result they involve more cutting to remove excess skin and significant time out in recovery and healing.

At YOUnique Medical Spa we have had a lot of success with liposuction for breast reduction and this is a technique we have world leading expertise in.

The breast is mostly fat, and we can work around milk ducts, cause less disruption, avoid skin loss and achieve a very natural look. As the entry points are very small and in invisible positions, there is no scarring in the sense that there is with conventional surgery. Because we are only permanently removing fat cells, the effect is similar to that of you losing weight except that liposuction may also have the effect of tightening the skin. While fat cells can expand in size, if you later gain weight it is difficult for the treated area to ever reach its pre-operational dimension since some cells have been permanently removed.

At YOUnique Medical Spa we practice the Tumescent Liposuction technique which minimizes bruising and swelling after the procedure. This is carried out without awareness, discomfort or pain to you. A fine suction tube is inserted through 3 to 5 tiny incisions that are made in the problem area. These are only 3-4mm wide and so heal easily and invisibly after the procedure.

With the tumescent technique, large amounts of diluted local anesthetic and adrenalin are infused into the fatty area resulting in the numbness of the area and constriction of blood vessels. The fat cells are then removed via the tube.

Who can benefit?

Many women can benefit from this procedure but there are some limitations depending on breast size, the desired reduction, skin type and quality, and the elasticity of the skin and tissue. The bottom line is that we need to see you in person to properly make this assessment.

What happens in a typical treatment? How will you feel during treatment?

Essentially the treatment is carried out the same way as liposuction to other areas of the body.

The procedure is done under a local anesthetic and because diluted local anesthetic is pumped into the area being treated you will not feel any pain or discomfort. We do occasionally use a general anesthetic for various reasons but this is usually not necessary.

How will you feel after the treatment? What do you need to do after the treatment to ensure the best result?

After your procedure you may feel drowsy from the anesthetic. It is important that someone drive you home and stay overnight. On this evening we recommend you rest. The next day you must come back to the centre for your first postoperative check.

You will be given some medication to take to prevent swelling and infection and it is important you take this as instructed. You will need to wear a supportive bra 24 hours per day to assist in healing and minimize sagging of the breasts.

You may experience some discomfort and stiffness initially (a little like having done a strenuous gym workout) but this will gradually disappear. The puffiness, tenderness and bruising (if any) of the treated area will generally disappear within 3 weeks or so. Most patients tolerate the discomfort without the need for painkillers (i.e. Panadol) but you may take these if you wish. Following the first day we recommend you walk for at least 30 minutes each day and otherwise continue with your normal activities. It is not recommended that you swim or shave for the first few days after the procedure since this carries with it the risk of infection. As we supervise your recovery we will let you know when it is safe to phase in these sorts of activities.

You should avoid long car or plane trips during this time but if you do undertake these you must walk for at least five minutes every hour during the trip. You can return to non-strenuous work within two days but should not attempt more strenuous activity until we advise this is OK. If you experience discomfort with any activity it should be discontinued. We will guide you through this as we see you for your checkups and are of course available anytime you need us.

When will you see results?

While you will see some results straightaway, you will not see the full result of your treatment until all swelling has settled down. This usually subsides over the first few weeks but may take longer. It is important to use a good supportive bra during this time.

How many sessions are necessary?

Usually only one treatment is required but sometimes more treatments are needed to obtain the best result with larger breasts.

While this information is intended to give you a good overall picture of how breast reduction with liposuction may help you, your situation is unique. The best way to find out if this is the right answer for you is to come and see us. There are no sales pitches and we will explain all the options to you and empower you to make the right decision.

How much does it cost?

We understand you are curious to know how much the procedure you are thinking of having might cost.

The truth is that with many procedures your cost can fall within a fairly wide range. While we do offer online consultation, we believe it is unethical to give a cost estimate without gaining a proper understanding of your needs.

Your body, your skin and your expectations are different to anybody else's. Some patients have been attracted by an initial quote only to find the final price was a lot higher. Sometimes these initial estimates do not cover such elements as operating room fees or the cost of an anesthetist.
